Artists Statement
Light and colour have proven therapeutic benefits’. Our moods and sense of wellbeing are positively affected in response to light and colour, which is particularly pertinent within a therapeutic environment. We work very directly with light and colour, and wanted to create a light, bright and uplifting artwork that would exploit these attributes. The artwork is also designed to be responsive to the viewer’s movements, a diverting and engaging experience for patients, visitors and staff.
The printed image is an imaginary digital photomontage of a wide variety of boats and craft that are brought together for an imagined event (the intention was not to represent a particular day or event in any particular location). Inspiration was drawn from a wide variety of locations up and down the Essex coastline and estuaries.
The way the different working boats, sailing and iconic heritage boats are brought together is a metaphor for the way different the aspects of the health community comes together to support those in need of their help. It is a tribute to the dedicated staff working in the Radiotherapy Centre and those who support their hard work by their generous donations.
